Kids can tap into their creativity at acting and fine arts camps.

Summers aren’t meant to be wasted staring at device screens, and the Shelby County Arts Council is offering creative camps for kids to ensure that doesn’t happen. After the final bell rings at school, kids can get their creativity flowing and make new friends at the hands-on camps.

For starters, the big red truck rolls into Columbiana for the Missoula Children’s Theater Camp in June. Each year the MCT comes to town and puts on a full-scale play, complete with scenery, songs and dialogue, in just one week. Each camper who signs up has a role in the play.

This year’s performance is the enchanting tale of Pinocchio. Not only does this camp teach public speaking skills, but it reinforces memorization with music and repetition, and teaches campers how to work together. Campers will also participate in arts and crafts activities. Space is limited. The camp will take place at Shelby County High School from June 10-14, with the performance on Saturday, June 15.

And for your aspiring artist, check out the summer Fine Art Camps in July. This year’s camp theme is “Art Through the Ages.” From fossils to the Greek gods, campers will learn about art and the history behind some of the most exciting eras of art around the world.

Campers will create a variety of artwork such as painting, collage, clay, drawing and more with artist Edna Sealy. Students will have hands-on experience learning about cave drawings, fossils, Greek and Roman frescos, Egyptian hieroglyphics and more. Students will also get to meet and learn from local guest artists throughout the week.

Each camp session ends with a fun gallery reception to show off the young artists’ creations. Camp for ages 5-8 is $125 per student and runs from July 8-12. Camp for ages 9-12 is $195 each and runs from July 15-19. These camps will take place at the Shelby County Arts Council.
