When summer meets fall
Story by Jessica Vance and photos by Jon Goering
Fall in the South does not differ too much from summer in the South. It is still hot and humid, but with harsh winters of late, you are going to need some fashion pieces to help you switch from sandals and swimsuits to sweaters and shawls. The fall season is all about transition pieces that can be worn now and then layered upon for the winter months.

Dress from The Cat’s Meow in Chelsea. Gray shawl from Nation’s Outfitters. Shoes from Chic Boutique in Greystone.
Southerners live in dresses for the summer, so let’s not change that for the fall. Funky frocks like the one featured from Chic Boutique can be modified for colder weather. Add opaque tights and a dark-colored knee boot for a great fall look. This dress would also look great with a jacket tossed on top.
Dresses, like the one featured from The Cat’s Meow, are great go-to pieces. Wear it as — is now and then
throw a sweater on top cinched with a belt to carry you through fall. If the dress is short on you, it could even be paired with dark denim for more of a tunic-look.
And don’t worry about having to stock your closet with brand-new looks for the fall and winter seasons. Instead, invest in a few staple sweaters and shawls to wrap on top of the tops you already own. For example, the great blue top featured from Nation’s Outfitters can easily be worn now and then in the colder months with a neutral sweater.
So whether you are headed into work or back to class, start shopping now — not for a whole new wardrobe, but for a few staple fall-back items to carry your wardrobe from the summer season straight to fall.
